This article documents how the password for the root user of STARFACE is read and how it is composed in detail. This password is necessary to access the appliance with the user "root" (without quotation marks) via ssh or via sFTP. It is assumed that there was no manual change of the root password (for example, by reinstalling the appliance via USB stick).

All necessary data is physically located on a sticker directly on the hardware of the STARFACE. Depending on the model, this sticker is attached to the back or the bottom side of the STARFACE. The format of the password is always:

the first 4 digits of the serial number - the second 4 digits of the serial number - the third 4 digits of the serial number - Key

The serial number is always a 12-digit number sequence (e.g. 101240440211 or 1313-8058-5478). The key mentioned above is always a 6-digit sequence of letters and numbers (z.B. ae78r2 or A54BXG). The following example data would result in the following passwords:

1012-4044-0211-ae78r2 or 1313-8058-5478-A54BXG

Note: When specifying the key, the case of the letters is always case-sensitive.

For the following STARFACE models, the password is always the same as described above.

  • STARFACE Light
  • STARFACE Compact
  • STARFACE Pro
  • STARFACE Advanced
  • STARFACE Enterprise
  • STARFACE Platinum

For a VM edition of the STARFACE, the default password after installation is always:

starface

Note: This default password of the STARFACE VM Edition should be changed as soon as possible after installation to avoid a potential security vulnerability.

For the two following, very old models of the STARFACE:

  • STARFACE Professional
  • STARFACE Small Business Appliance

the root password is different to the above information. Here is the format for the password:

starface-serial number (e.g. starface-162590).

Change the Root Password

To change the root password you have to log in with the current root access data on the STARFACE and enter the following command:

passwd

Then you are asked to enter the new password for the root user twice. The new password must be carefully documented.

Note: The password entry will not be indicated on the screen by anonymized characters (such as asterisks). The input itself, however, takes place anyway.
